US coach Emma Hayes fielded many experienced players, but the experience of playing with a new backline could be a reason for their defeat.

WASHINGTON — Within the first 14 minutes of Saturday's showdown between the world's top women's soccer teams, it was clear that Spain — the reigning World Cup champion and No. 1 team — outshot the U.S. team by two goals. It was just the third time in those 96 games that the U.S. team, ranked No. 2 and the reigning Olympic champion, trailed by two goals. The US team created several chances during the match, but ultimately lost 2–0, including missing a penalty kick.

The match was played at Audi Field in front of 19,220 spectators. This was the first of a series of two friendly matches between Spain and the US. Although this result had no significant consequences, it strengthened Spain's position and also enhanced their chances for the next 2027 World Cup. The two teams will face off again on Tuesday night in Chester, Pennsylvania, after which the U.S. team will turn its attention to a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier in the Dallas area next month. They need to win just one match to maintain their streak of playing in all 10 World Cups, and face 78th-ranked El Salvador.

This is not the first time this has happened between the US and Spain. The two teams had met four previous times, but this was their first encounter since 2022. The US has set the standard of excellence in women's soccer for decades, but Spain has made rapid progress in recent years. US coach Emma Hayes started seven players with World Cup or Olympic experience, but she also included a four-player backline that had never played together before. Tierna Davidson and Kennedy Wesley partnered in central defence, while Naomi Girma and Emily Sonnett, who were both injured, missed the match.

The Spanish attack posed a threat from the beginning. About three minutes into the game, the US trailed due to a failure to clear their own zone. Laya Codina won the ball in midfield. Spain's construction was fast and clever. After four passes, Patrice Guijarro found time and space outside the penalty area, and he delivered the ball with precision. In the 14th minute of the first goal, Spain took the lead again. Goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares delivered a long ball into midfield. Lucia Corrales kept it in defense, and Edna Imed set Salma Paraluelo free on the left. Paraluelo worked the ball past Davidson and chipped the ball into the heart of the box. Ava Navarro put the ball into the nearest goal in one go.

The score remained tied throughout the first half, but the US had chances. Trinity Rodman took two heavy touches in the box. Alyssa Thompson created a dangerous position on the right wing and had a shot cleared off the line. Nanclares touched Sophia Wilson's dangerous shot onto the crossbar.

The US continued to threaten late in the second half, particularly when Rodman passed to Wilson for a clear goal. The offside flag remained down, but video replays showed that Wilson was a step ahead of the last defender. The US increased the pressure on Spain, but the margin remained the same without scoring a goal or taking a shot from a good position. Hayes bolstered her bench and brought in NWSL leading scorer Ashley Sanchez for her first US appearance in two years.

Sanchez quickly created a chance, and Wilson was brought down in the box. Play continued, but video replay confirmed the foul. Rodman passed the ball to Yohannes, who at 19 is the US's youngest player. Yohannes took a stutter step on the penalty kick, but Nanclares stopped it. Spain's Athenia del Castillo showed a red card in the final minutes.

Before the match, retired left back Crystal Dunn was honored for her 12-year international career, which included 160 caps, 25 goals, a World Cup title and an Olympic gold medal. “She has been a role model for many people,” Hayes said.

What will happen next

The U.S. team will now turn its attention to its second friendly against Spain on Tuesday as they prepare for CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. They need to win only one match to maintain their World Cup playing streak. This match will be an important opportunity for them, in which they will get a chance to prove their abilities.
