Joan Laporta attended Spain's Nations League final against Portugal on Sunday in Munich. Six players of Barcelona were involved in this match. But Laporta's visit had another purpose - to meet with UEFA President Chequeferrin to reduce the punishment given to Barcelona for financial irregularities. The club is aware that it will face punishment due to differences in accounting with UEFA. The point of contention surrounds the 'planks' that Barcelona used to sign players such as Lewandowski, Kounde or Raphinha. LaLiga records these incomes as normal, while UEFA considers them extraordinary and therefore outside the rules. Laporta spoke with Checkferrin on the subject to explain the existing accounting differences between the two organisations, which are fully valid in LaLiga. Laporta looked very satisfied after the meeting and expressed hope that the punishment would not be too harsh. The severity of the punishment will depend on how these irregularities are interpreted, and Barcelona wants it to be as minimal as possible. Furthermore, in addition to this diplomatic route, Laporta has also taken a legal approach and sent objections to the matter. Barcelona was fined half a million euros two years ago. Now, being guilty again, the punishment will be more severe and it may also impact the level of play. The club may find that it has to cut the number of players in the Champions League or lose points in the competition. Barcelona is trying to keep this punishment to a minimum.
