Ruben Amorim has made an excellent start to life at AC Milan, becoming only the third manager in club history to go unbeaten in his first seven Serie A matches. According to Opta, with four wins and three draws, the Portuguese coach equaled Luis Carniglia's record set in 1963. Only Hector Purcelli had previously achieved this feat in 1955, achieving three wins and four draws in his first seven league matches.

Milan's impressive start continued with a 3-2 win against Atalanta on Sunday, taking Amorim's team up to fourth in Serie A. It's an encouraging start, especially considering his reputation suffered significantly during his time at Manchester United as was his former manager. However, in Italy, there are signs that Amorim are learning from their past mistakes and adapting their approach to the demands of their new environment.

Speaking to DAZN, the 41-year-old expressed confidence that his previous experience has prepared him to manage one of the most prestigious clubs in European football. "The experiences we have built at other clubs are helpful for every challenge. Here it is similar to Portugal. It is a different kind of pressure because people outside the club are very emotionally attached to the team," he said.

His difficulties were documented at Manchester United, where he became recognized for his insistence on a particular tactical system. Appointed after an impressive string of performances at Sporting CP in November 2024, Amorim gained fame in England for developing players and implementing an identifiable football style. However, translating that philosophy into consistent results proved difficult. United finished 15th in the Premier League in the 2024–25 season, their lowest finish since 1974.

At Milan, however, there are signs of a manager who is ready to evolve. The Rossoneri have shown greater tactical flexibility, and Amorim has shown the ability to adapt his approach to the challenges presented by his players and personal adversities. That development was evident in Sunday's win against Atalanta, where Milan took a three-goal lead through Goncalo Ramos, Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila. However, conceding two goals in the last 25 minutes began to jeopardize their earlier efforts.

Amorim admitted after the match that his team needed to improve their game management, especially when protecting an edge. “We played well until about the 66th minute, then the momentum changed,” he said. This shows that there is a need for improvement, but a willingness to recognize our shortcomings and discuss how to address them is an important part of Amorim's development.

Their early success has also been supported by impressive individual displays, with Rabiot providing energy and creativity at halftime, while Ramos gave Milan an effective attacking presence. The challenge now is to turn the late slump against Atlanta into a learning experience while maintaining that momentum. Additionally, there is a cultural element behind Amorim's encouraging start.

His experience in Portugal, particularly his successful tenure at Sporting, prepared him to manage a club where supporters consider football an integral part of their identity. Milan offers a similar emotional atmosphere, where expectations are shaped by the club's illustrious history and its status among Europe's elite. For Amorim, the task is to accommodate those expectations and not let them become a source of additional pressure.

However, Amorim still has a long way to go to succeed in Sandir. Seven unbeaten league matches provide an encouraging base, but maintaining that form during a challenging campaign will be the true measure of their progress. Still, their debut provides reason for real hope.

What will happen next

Moving forward, Amorim will need consistency to maintain his team's stability and reach the top spot in Serie A. In the next matches, they may need to make strategic changes to improve the performance of their players even more. If they maintain their form, AC Milan could be in the title race this season.
