Portugal's match against Norway is important for the Nations League, as another win could take them into the last eight. Cristiano Ronaldo's absence in this match has affected the team's strategy, but coach Jorge Jesus has advised the players to remain focused. Despite the Ronaldo controversy, it is important to focus on the team's cohesion and performance.

Key points

• Portugal shelve Ronaldo controversy as Jesus demands full focus on Norway.

Jorge Jesus said Portugal are solely focused on Sunday's match against Norway, while the consequences of Cristiano Ronaldo's withdrawal from the team have been postponed until after the game. Ronaldo's international career appears to be over after he caused a stir this week after walking out of the Portugal camp amid reports of differences with new head coach Jesus. Jesus, who worked with Ronaldo at Al Nassr, left the 41-year-old on the bench during the 2-1 Nations League win against Erling Haaland and his team in Oslo. Ronaldo then trained separately from his teammates and left the camp before a thrilling 4–2 win against Denmark, in which Joao Cancelo, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha and Joao Félix scored. Ronaldo said on social media that he would "tell the truth" about his exit from the camp. Jesus declined to go into detail about the incident, saying only that he would never allow any player to influence his decisions.

Portugal will play their first home match since Ronaldo's departure on Sunday, knowing that another win over Norway will take them to the last eight next March. And that's what is on Jesus' mind, telling reporters: "The focus should be on the national team, and in this case Norway, on what we have to do well. It's not about negating Chris, he is a symbol of the national team and Portugal. After the game, there will be plenty of time to talk about it." When asked if Ronaldo could return as an ambassador ahead of the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco, Jesus said: "You're already looking towards 2030. It's four years away. Football happens every day, it's not even by the month. Tomorrow [Sunday], the game is the most important thing. It will be very intense, and that's what I want to talk about. I don't want to change the subject. I don't want to talk about that. "I will focus on what I said - Norway is a team that, in my opinion, is in the top five in Europe. Then, we will have time to analyze what happens here." Jesus was also asked what kind of reaction he expected from Portugal's home fans, given the perception of falling out with the country's greatest player. "The affection I want should be the only one that the national team should get," he said. "The affection should be for the team, for the players. I'm part of a team, I'm the commander of a team. Earlier, I was also a fanatic, crazy fan of the national team, and I didn't care about the coach or

Didn't see the players, I saw the flag. I just want to be part of the national team." Since the start of 2025, Portugal have won 80% of matches that have not involved Ronaldo (P5 W4 D1), while they have won only 59% when Ronaldo has been involved (P17 W10 D4 L3), and have averaged almost twice as many goals per game (3.4) without Ronaldo.

What will happen next

Portugal's next match is against Norway, where they need to win. Jesus has said that the team should not be affected by the Ronaldo controversy and should focus on their performances. If Portugal is successful in defeating Norway, it will pave the way for them to progress in the Nations League.
