Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaisle has explained why German international Nick Woltehammed decided to move from the Premier League club to Juventus on loan. The 38-year-old coach explained that Newcastle's high-pressing tactics and increased competition in attacking positions have led the striker to seek more regular playing time in Italy. Voldemort's move comes a year after he joined Newcastle from WB Stuttgart for a reported €90 million.

The former Stuttgart striker enjoyed a good start to life in England, but his prospects changed following the appointment of Jasle at Newcastle and a major overhaul of the summer squad. In an interview, which appeared in Kicker Magazine in Monday's print edition, Jesley said that he appreciated Voltamede, despite being allowed to leave temporarily. Djisle reiterated his personal respect for Voltemed and revealed that he had several personal conversations with the 24-year-old player.

The Newcastle coach acknowledged that Voltamede faced competition from other players who were better suited to the team's immediate tactical needs. This decision was not a reflection of VoltaMed's overall capability. Rather, Jaisalle suggested that the striker's immediate prospects were hampered by Newcastle's new style of play and competition for minutes. "We communicated clearly where he stood in the team at that time, especially taking into account that we play high-pressing football," Jasle said. Jaisley also said that at the time, one or two other players were slightly ahead of Voltamede.

Jaisley also rejected suggestions that sharing nationality with Voltamede affected his assessment. "Open dialogue is important, whether someone is your fellow countryman or not," the Newcastle coach said. “But I rate him very highly, and of course he is our player because he has only gone on loan.”

The move to Voltamade is part of a wider restructuring following Jaisley's arrival at Newcastle. The German coach was brought in to oversee a new chapter at St James' Park following the departure of Eddie Howe. The club has now adopted an ambitious youth-focused strategy, described internally as "Brave Vision", prioritizing younger players and a more aggressive playing style. Jessell told Kicker that Newcastle are currently the youngest team in the Premier League, with the average age of players being under 25. The 38-year-old coach has attempted to introduce quicker attacking transitions and more intense pressing, although he acknowledged the process will inevitably involve periods of inconsistency.

Woltemaid has previously spoken enthusiastically about Newcastle and the opportunity to make his mark in English football. In a December 2025 interview, covered by Get German Football News, the former Stuttgart striker praised former manager Eddie Howe and discussed his adjustment to life on Tyneside. For now, Zalle has indicated that the Bundesliga-developed striker is still part of Newcastle's long-term plans.

What will happen next

Now, Voltamede will look to get regular game time during his loan spell at Juventus, which could improve his form. If he is successful in Italy, it is likely his role could change upon his return to Newcastle. Furthermore, his progress could serve as an example for other young players in the Premier League who are trying to advance their careers amid the competition.
