In a recent report, Media Foot claimed that Sunderland are in talks to bring in Olympique Marseille midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia. The Black Cats are reported to be attempting to bring the Central African Republic international to the Stadium of Light this off-season. Kondogbia was an important squad player for Marseille last season, but he missed several matches due to injuries. The 33-year-old made 17 appearances for the French side last campaign, making one assist across all competitions. The Central African Republic player is one of the most experienced defensive midfielders in Ligue 1. Therefore, if Sunderland are successful in bringing him in on a short-term contract in this transfer window, he could become a real asset for them. Kondogbia's current contract with Marseille expires at the end of next season, which could give the Black Cats the opportunity to recruit him on the cheap this summer. He can tackle the ball accurately and is able to spot danger to win the ball back for his team in his own half. When the opposition team is on the attack, they usually clear their area and are good at passing the ball. Kondogbia is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play as a centre-back or box-to-box midfielder when needed. However, there are some questions over whether he would be able to adjust to the higher intensity of the Premier League if the Black Cats were to sign him this summer. Kondogbia would add solidity and depth to Sunderland coach Regis Le Breus' midfield. He is good enough to serve as a good rotational player in the Wearside club's squad next season. At 33 years old, Kondogbia may still have some good seasons left to play at a high level. Therefore, Sunderland would be wise to try to bring him in on a short-term deal in this transfer window.
