• Harry Kane breaks England appearance record but can he take that final step to complete his career?.

Some things in life are inevitable. Harry Kane's performances for England are always one of those. In his historic 125th match, he performed as per the script. On this occasion, Kane displayed his skills, winning the match and leading England to victory. Everyone knew that he would score a goal in this match. It's the same feeling that happens in every match. But he still experiences the same excitement. "I think it's beyond even my wildest dreams," he said after the match. "Getting to 125 now, it's really a big honor."

This match – and the three goals he contributed for England – was a perfect summary of Harry Kane's England career. In the first goal, he switched to the right wing, showing how Kane can be present in any corner of the field. This is classic Ken. But two of his goals were classic centre-forward strikes. In the heart of the penalty area, almost like a classic number 9. "He is playing at a level that is unmatched," Jude Bellingham said of Kane's record-breaking night. "He's having fun scoring goals, he's getting deep and making passes and making contributions, making tackles and getting involved in everything. He's just getting better."

What makes Kane's achievement even more unique is that he made his debut for England at the age of 21. For a generationally talented player in the modern game, this is somewhat unusual. For example, Bellingham played his first match when he was 17 years old. Kane did not experience the teenage years that Wayne Rooney or Michael Owen experienced. Bukayo Saka and Rio Ferdinand also made their debut for England at the age of 19. Declan Rice and Phil Foden were 20 years old. Kane was a slow-moving player who made his mark through the EFL and became a national hero. And thereafter 125 caps in 11 years. His constant availability is incredible. In England's last 101 competitive matches – spanning a decade – Kane has been available for selection in all but one match: a Nations League defeat against Greece in 2024. In every other match, he has been available for the Three Lions. This century of almost perfect England performances in a decade. "Of course, there have been times when I have played through pain," he said. "I think every player goes through pain at some stage or deals with some injuries. I think over the last six years I have been very stable in that regard."

It is important that we recognize that Kane has not always been 100 per cent fit. He was clearly troubled by something in the Euro 2024 campaign and final but still endured the pain. But his predecessor Rooney has been plagued by injuries throughout his career.

Now it is important to understand that Kane never intended to distance himself from the national team. “To consistently reach a high level you have to always be hungry, always striving for more,” he said. "Sometimes players or people reach the top and think it's time to relax, and that's when you see players fall off. For me it's the opposite. When I'm at the top, there's more to do, and more improvements to find."

Kane has been an exemplary player for England this generation - but all that remains is for him to confirm his place as the greatest player of any generation. Is he already England's best player? Possibly. Having record appearances and goalscorers is hard to say and hard to argue against. But one thing that Ronaldo, Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore have in common is trophies at international level. "Absolutely, I would trade all [caps and goals] to win something with England."

Kane is now eyeing 100 goals at international level, an opportunity to join a very elite class of strikers. “I try not to think about it too much,” he said, with a hint of humility. "It's like a cricketer who played in the 90s, the more you think about 100, the more you don't know how to get there."

There is still a lot left for Harry Kane. He now faces a last chance at Euro 2028 and possibly the next World Cup. "I'm in pretty good shape," he said. "Some players continue to play at a high level even in their 30s. It happens to me with every season. As long as I can help the team, I will stay."

Overall, there is a message that Kane stands for. "Don't have any regrets." They've done a lot - but now it's time for the final, big challenge. Win everything.
