Folarin Balogun makes great debut in FIFA World Cup but questions on citizenship

Folarin Balogun made his debut in the FIFA World Cup by scoring two goals in his first match against Paraguay. But Balogun only represents America because he was born into a unique situation. It is ironic that the country's leading striker is part of President Donald Trump's view that people whose parents are in the US illegally or on temporary visas should not get citizenship.

Balogun, who is 24 and a product of Arsenal's youth academy, could also represent England or Nigeria. But in 2001, his mother traveled to New York and had to stay there to give birth. For this reason Balogun got citizenship in America by birth.

Trump's executive order seeks to deny citizenship to children who are in the US illegally or on temporary visas. However, it was Balogun's brilliance that caught everyone's attention in last week's match against Paraguay. AC Milan midfielder Christian Pulisic said the United States are "really lucky" to have Balogun with them.


Balogun has scored 11 goals in 28 games for the United States. There was a time when it was not certain that Balogun would represent the United States. Playing at England under-21 level, he put in a stellar performance at Reims last year, which caught the attention of US officials.

Balogun announced his commitment and said that the fans have always supported him. But it's also worth noting that if Trump's executive order goes into effect, the citizenship status for players like Balogun and others could be uncertain.
