Cristiano Ronaldo decided to walk out of the Portugal national team camp on September 30, just hours after coach Jorge Jesus ruled out any rift with the 41-year-old striker. "After the team press conference and a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Association, I have decided to leave the camp. At the appropriate time, I will tell the people of Portugal the reasons for my departure," Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram. Ronaldo did not provide any additional information, but he did wish his teammates good luck in the upcoming matches. This decision has raised many questions regarding his future in the national team, but Ronaldo did not make any announcement of ending his international career.

The incident began when Portugal won 2–1 against Norway in Oslo on 27 September. In this match, Ronaldo was benched and was not included in the game, while he was warming up off the bench. After the match ended, Ronaldo went straight to the dressing room, rather than thanking the audience with his teammates.

Ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark on 1 October, Jesus ruled out any conflict with Ronaldo. He said that it is natural for a player to be disappointed when he does not go into the game even after doing warm-up. “There has been no incident,” Jesus said. "I've experienced it myself as a player. When you do 20 or 30 minutes of warm-up and then don't go into the game, no one is happy."

Jesus also revealed that he had already informed Ronaldo that he would not be in the starting eleven against Norway, but he could be given a chance to play in the match. "Then, as a coach, I decided not to bring him into the game. It's nothing big," he explained. Jesus also said that Ronaldo had not refused to practice on 29 September.

Ronaldo did not practice with the team in Denmark after missing on 29 September. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) reported that Ronaldo needed to practice separately to improve his fitness. Earlier, Ronaldo had shared a picture of himself wearing team clothes, to which he added a heart and Portugal flag symbol.

This situation forced FPF President Pedro Pronça to change his schedule so he could go to Copenhagen. Ronaldo and Jesus had a conversation on the night of 29 September, which may have helped resolve any differences between them. But the next day, the Portuguese captain decided to leave the camp.

Ronaldo had previously considered leaving the national team after the World Cup, but decided instead to pursue 1,000 career goals. He was included in the 25-man list this time and played in a 1–0 win against Wales on 24 September, but failed to score. Portugal lead Group 4 of the Nations League A with six points from two matches. After the match against Denmark, they will return for their home match in Norway on 4 October. Portugal are currently the defending champions, having defeated Spain in a penalty shootout in the 2025 final.

What will happen next

After this decision of Ronaldo, Portugal will have to face his absence in the Nations League match against Denmark. Coach Jorge Jesus will now need to give opportunities to new players and remodel the team structure. More information is expected about Ronaldo's future, which may decide the direction of his international career.
