Background

Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed dissatisfaction with his return to the national team since Jorge Jesus became coach. The Portuguese Football Association has invited Ronaldo to return to the team, but the path to his return will depend on his understanding with Jesus.

Why it matters

Cristiano Ronaldo's refusal to return to the national team is a significant issue for Portugal, especially as the team's future under new coach Jorge Jesus is being determined. The absence of an experienced player like Ronaldo can negatively impact the team's match impact and season outlook.

The Portuguese Football Association has sent a message to Cristiano Ronaldo that he is welcome back into the national team if he wishes. But the problem is that Ronaldo doesn't want that as long as Jorge Jesus is the coach. According to an ESPN report on Tuesday, the 41-year-old superstar has given an ultimatum to the Portuguese Football Association, refusing to return to the national team under Jesus.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus and union president Pedro Proenca have slammed the "agreement" reached last week over Ronaldo's absence from the national team's training camp. He said after Sunday's 2-1 win against Norway that the experienced star could return at any time. "We are talking about the greatest player who has contributed to Portuguese football for more than two decades. He will always be part of this team, as long as he is technically capable of playing. Ronaldo knows that," Proenca told Portuguese TV channel RTP.

Ronaldo said as he left Portugal's training camp on Wednesday that Jesus had said he would not play in a match against Denmark, despite Jesus previously saying he would play. New coach Jorge Jesus had said when he took charge that discussing Ronaldo's future was a priority. Ronaldo said he would "in time to explain to the Portuguese people the reasons behind his departure", but has not commented on the matter.

Jesus said on Sunday that he had no reason to apologize to anyone and that if Ronaldo wanted to come back, he would invite him back for the next international break. Proenka said everyone will find time to sit together and discuss the situation. "Ronaldo is an icon of our country. He is a Portuguese icon, an absolutely extraordinary player," he said.

Although Ronaldo said that the 2026 World Cup will be his last, he has not commented on his future in the international game. Jesus took charge in July after Portugal's World Cup exit and he said he needed to discuss Ronaldo's future at some point. "It's a conversation we have to have together. What does he want to do for the future of his career?"

What will happen next

Jorge Jesus will now face the challenge of leading the team without Ronaldo, while Portugal will have to redefine their strengths and tactics in the next matches. If Ronaldo remains in his position, Portugal will have to rely on other players, which could affect their bowling and attacking ability.
