Cristiano Ronaldo's temporary suspension comes as the Portuguese Football Federation investigates his leaving the team. Cristiano Ronaldo has been temporarily suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) while it investigates a case of leaving his national team. A statement issued by the FPF's Disciplinary Council revealed that Ronaldo's case was referred to a disciplinary investigation committee on 10 October. The hearing of this case will be done expeditiously and its information will not be made public until the investigation is over. The FPF has not yet announced the final punishment against Ronaldo, but according to Portuguese media, Ronaldo could be suspended for one to six months.

The situation arose when Ronaldo left the team camp during preparation for the UEFA Nations League matches against Denmark and Norway on 30 September. The reason for this decision was his dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, when Ronaldo was not given a chance to play in the match against Norway on 27 September. In that match, Ronaldo was asked to warm-up, but was ultimately not fielded. After the match ended, Ronaldo left the field without thanking his teammates.

On 30 September, after Jorge Jesus' press conference, Ronaldo decided to leave the team. Earlier this week, Ronaldo explained that there was a lack of trust between him and the coach, as promises to play in some games were not fulfilled. Nevertheless, he apologized to his teammates and fans and admitted that he should not have left the team. He also appealed to the FPF to take disciplinary action for his actions.

Ronaldo made it clear that he is ready to accept any punishment and wants to continue playing for the national team. He expressed his desire to return to the Portugal team while the matter is still under investigation by the disciplinary authority. Following this controversial team camp, Ronaldo began playing for Al Nassr on 9 October, where he scored his first goal in a 3–0 win against Al Diriyah. This goal was the 980th goal of his career, which is a world record. Even during this suspension, Ronaldo can play for Al Nassr. Their next match will be against Neftchi Ferghana (Uzbekistan) in the AFC Champions League on 12 October. Even if Ronaldo does not play for Portugal this season, he will still have the opportunity to reach the goal of 1,000 goals, an important milestone in his career. The next camp of the Portugal team will be in November 2026, in which they will play two matches against Denmark and Wales. After this, Jorge Jesus' team will play two matches in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League in March 2027.

What will happen next

Ronaldo's case will be heard before a disciplinary investigation committee on October 10, and no information will be made public until the end of the investigation. If Ronaldo is suspended, it will be a big challenge for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, as they rely on Ronaldo's abilities. Due to this situation, the outcome of the upcoming matches will be important for Ronaldo and his fans.
