Former English bowler Chris Woakes has backed Cricket England and Wales' (ECB) new initiatives that plan to take cricket to more than 3,500 teachers and 1,700 state secondary schools. The 'Cricket for Teachers' program and the 'Secondary Countdown Cricket' competition are part of the ECB's ambition to reach more than half of all state secondary schools by the end of 2028.
Cricket for Teachers is a free teacher training program which aims to provide physical education teachers with the confidence, skills and knowledge to conduct quality cricket sessions. Participating schools will receive training, resources, equipment and ongoing support to help establish a sustainable cricket culture. Woakes, who has twice won World Cups with England, said: "I was lucky to discover my love of cricket in my school and local community. I know how important these experiences can be to young people."

Woakes, who retires from international cricket in 2025, said: "These programs will help introduce cricket to children who have never picked up a bat and ball. The more opportunities we can provide in state schools, the stronger and more inclusive the future of our game will be."
In line with the ECB's new training programme, Secondary Countdown Cricket is a new mass participation soft ball competition for students aged 11 to 16. The funding for this initiative will provide schools with training, equipment, resources and opportunities to play competitively, making cricket more accessible than ever.
Richard Thompson, Chairman of the ECB, said: “When we launched the State Schools Action Plan, we promised to create more opportunities for young people from every background to experience cricket. Today's launch is an important step forward in delivering on that promise. State schools educate the majority of young people in England and Wales, so if we want cricket to be the country's most inclusive team sport, we need to make sure those schools have the support they need. Cricket for Teachers and Secondary Countdown Cricket will help break down barriers, boost confidence in teachers and give millions of young people the opportunity to enjoy our game.
What will happen next
Under the ECB's plans, training programs and resources will be delivered to promote cricket education in schools over the next few years. With the support of Vox, it is expected that more children will be attracted to cricket and develop the culture of the game in their communities. Successful implementation of this initiative may increase the popularity of cricket in UK Football.
