Martin O'Neill is set to remain as manager of Celtic, having led the team to win the Premiership and Scottish Cup double after two interim spells last season. The 74-year-old has agreed a one-year deal, which includes the option of a further year, following talks with the club's majority shareholder Dermot Desmond this week. Celtic have not yet officially confirmed this appointment. After 20 years as he ended his five-year spell as manager of Celtic, O'Neill returned on a temporary basis at the end of October when Brendan Rodgers' tenure ended. He supervised eight matches. O'Neill again took over as Celtic boss in early January, being appointed for the entire season. The race for the league title lasted until the final day, with Celtic beating long-time leaders Hearts 3–1 to finish on top. Then, two weeks earlier, O'Neill won his ninth trophy as manager of Celtic with a 3–1 victory in the Scottish Cup final against Dunfermline Athletic. Over his two spells in the 2025–26 season, O'Neill managed 35 matches in all competitions, including 27 wins and four draws. His league average of 2.56 points per game is equal to his 2000–05 counterpart's figure. Former Celtic player Robbie Keane has been linked with the job of managing Celtic and has reportedly left Ferencvaros. Danish coach Jens Barthel Askau was also linked with a move to the Scottish champions, but he left Motherwell for Toulouse. As winners of the Premiership, Celtic will enter the Champions League play-off round, the stage where they lost the previous season. This secured a Europa League place in the league stage, with O'Neill managing four of those matches and a knockout defeat by Stuttgart. Former Leicester, Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland coach O'Neill followed up Celtic's League Cup semi-final win at Hampden against Rangers in November with a 3–1 final defeat at the national stadium under Nancy. Rangers were also eliminated at the quarter-final stage in the Scottish Cup by O'Neill's Celtic in March.
