Aston Villa's recent success has given Unnai Emery new reasons to enjoy his job, even if he faces financial limitations. After losing three of his team's first four Premier League matches, Villa have won six of their next seven matches in all competitions, including a 2–1 win against Manchester City. The result marks Villa's fourth consecutive home win against City and reinforces the belief that Emery can rebuild his team without relying on expensive, established stars.

Villa still sit 12th in the league, but their perfect start to the Champions League first leg provides further encouragement. As John Townley reports for Birmingham Live, Emery is particularly excited by the challenge of developing the youth squad. The Spanish coach has spent four years at Villa Park, during which he has won one European trophy and qualified for the Champions League twice during his coaching career. These achievements provide context to Villa's changing recruitment strategy.

This summer, the club sold several established players, including Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, Emi Martínez and Ezri Konsa, while they have prioritized young replacements who have greater potential. Nicholas Jackson, Jeon Suzuki, Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes represent this change. Jackson's seven goals in his first 11 games, including six in his last six games, provide an early indication of how the new players can contribute.

Emery has admitted that he would sometimes like to sign the world's best players, but has acknowledged the club's financial limitations. "I'm not disappointed," he said, explaining that he enjoys seeing the development of individuals and seeing the team improve collectively. He also praised Villa's extensive plans, which include a proposed expansion of Villa Park to accommodate 50,000 supporters.

"Every year we had to sell some players, but we also bought players who had potential. This summer it was a little different; we sold more than ever before," Emery said. "We were buying younger and more players. It will take time to understand. But I am not disappointed. I like building teams, watching them individually and collectively to see how they progress. I would sometimes like to buy the best players in the world! But I accept what we are doing and what our potential is. But the club is putting a lot of effort into many things."

Villa's approach makes sense because it is essential to marry financial discipline and competitive progress. Selling valuable players creates space for youth recruitment, but those replacements will take time to learn the tactics Emery demands. Jackson's early scoring record suggests Villa have found an effective forward player, while Suzuki and Manzambi provide opportunities to build around the young talent. However, Villa will need to maintain their results in the Premier League and Champions League before anyone can believe that the rebuild has been completely successful. The proposed stadium expansion would strengthen the club's long-term aspirations, although investment in infrastructure would not immediately address the challenge of competing with wealthier rivals. Emery's biggest contribution may be his ability to improve players without demanding expensive replacements. The real test for Aston Villa will be how well Emery can turn consistent youth recruits into reliable performers while working within the club's financial limitations. Their recent results give them confidence that this strategy can work.

What will happen next

Aston Villa will now look to progress into the Premier League with their youth squad, while new players will be further developed under Emery's plans. It will be important to focus on his performances in the upcoming matches, especially considering his debut in the Champions League. If Villa maintain similar success, they could move further up the league.

Can reach heights.
