Liverpool had planned a major rebuild this summer. Four new players were introduced at Anfield, but Liverpool fans were expecting further changes. Certainly, the arrivals of Ronald Araujo and Jeremy Jacket have had a significant impact on the development of things, but if one or two more players had been included, the results would probably have been even better.

Andreini Iraola needs to steer his team in the right direction, but it is easier to establish his style of play with new players than with players who are already used to playing a certain way. Liverpool's decision to sign only four players shocked fans. Obviously, the winter transfer window is now upon us and there are even more changes to be expected as some of Liverpool's first team players are already in discussions to join other teams.

Alisson's contract extension was a good deal for Liverpool this summer. Alisson, 34, is one of the Reds' longest-serving players and, although he is now in the final stages of his career, he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Some of his performances in the 2026-27 season have proven him to be brilliant and it is clear that he is still Liverpool's first choice option, especially since Georgi Mamardashvili is his backup.

However, given his advancing age and injury history, questions are being raised whether or not Liverpool should extend his position. Most people believe they should, but since nothing has been finalized, the rumor mill is running wild. Tuttosport have now reported that Juventus are once again trying to sign the Brazilian. "The first name is Alison, whom Massara and Spalletti got to know closely in Rome," he wrote. "He will turn 35 in October 2027, but his performances have not been affected; quite the contrary. He is still among the top ten goalkeepers in the world and in recent months he spoke directly to Lúcio about joining Juventus. Then, Liverpool, who were facing a lack of leadership, decided to secure him. The Brazilian goalkeeper is eligible to consider a free transfer: on a salary lower than his current salary, “He could be an opportunity.”

Rio Ferdinand described some of Alisson's performances as "brilliant", proving just how good he really is. Sure, if his injury rate goes down he could easily stay with Liverpool until he turns 40, but since Mamardashvili replaced Alisson for 20 matches last season, it's clear he's a bit injury prone. The amount of time Alisson has spent for Liverpool is unprecedented for any goalkeeper and, although he has managed to stay fit for them so far, there is still a lot left to do in the season. So, it is completely understandable if the Reds do not want to risk a player at £150,000-a-week who may or may not be fit, but they cannot just rely on Mamardashvili. Luka Brugmans is probably another option the Reds would have to explore, but as he would only be 19 at the time, it seems like a lot of pressure to insert him straight away in goal.

All of this suggests that Liverpool are in need of a new goalkeeper and, until they land one of these, they should not consider letting Alisson go.

What will happen next

Further changes are expected for Liverpool in the winter transfer window, as a number of first team players are in talks to join other clubs. Andreini Iraola will need more players to get his team in the right direction. If Liverpool want to improve their performance, they will have to integrate with new players.
