Alexis Sanchez, who has been a part of big clubs like Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter Milan in his career, currently plays for Montreal CF. The 37-year-old veteran recently courted controversy during a match when he made headlines without even taking the field.

The time of this incident was when Montreal CF was playing a match against Forges FC. In the second half of the game, when the score was 1–1, Montreal CF had to play with 10 players due to Brian Vera's red card. In this situation, Sanchez was sent to the side of the field for warm-up. The match went into extra time, and Sanchez continued his warm-up in the meantime.

Then, Montreal coach Phillip Olafree made the decision to substitute him at the last minute, but Sanchez did not take the field. Scenes captured on camera show that the experienced winger got angry and sat on the bench again and had a few words with the coach. It appears that Sanchez was persuaded to take the field, but ultimately did not participate in the game.

The match eventually went to a penalty shootout, with Forge FC recording a historic victory. This was the first time a team from the Canadian Premier League won the Canadian Cup title. This controversial behavior of Sanchez became a topic for Olafree in a press conference. The coach explained his position, saying, "Our goal was to play 11-11, so that we could field Sanchez in the best position. Unfortunately, that did not happen."

Olafree also said that he and Sanchez's relationship "has not deteriorated," but he clearly warned that, "No matter how famous he is, we will look at what the player can perform on the field. We are playing 10 versus 11. We cannot change everything just to bring a famous player into the game."

Alexis Sanchez has played 13 matches for Montreal CF so far and this controversy regarding his status could prove to be a turning point in his career.

What will happen next

Filip Olafree now needs to repair his relationship with Sanchez and maintain team unity. In the upcoming matches, Montreal CF will have to strategize taking into account Sanchez's situation.
