French Ligue 1 club Brest have announced that their manager Eric Roy has died at the age of 58. Roy's family said the former Sunderland midfielder battled pancreatic cancer for three years. Roy, who was Watford's sporting director in 2019 when the club was in the Premier League, joined Brest in January 2023 and helped them qualify for the Champions League for the 2024-25 season – their first campaign in Europe.

"It is difficult to find words to express the sadness we feel at the passing of our coach Eric Roy," Brest wrote on the X platform. The club president, management and all members of Stade Brestois 29 join his family, wife, two children and all loved ones in their grief.

His family said: "Father was very kind, gentle, honest and truthful. He encouraged, shared knowledge, inspired others to move towards excellence. He had a demanding nature, justice and humanity."

Roy, who also played for and managed France's Nice club, scored one goal in 27 appearances for Sunderland during the 1999–2000 season.
