On 2 June 1963, the Italy Cup final was played in Milan. Atalanta and Torino were face to face in this match, while there was an atmosphere of concern in Bergamo regarding the health condition of Pope John XXIII. The Pope, who was a resident of Sotto il Monte in Bergamo, died shortly afterwards. Therefore Atalanta's 3–1 victory, the club's only trophy, was celebrated with little celebration. The people of the city were sad about the Pope's illness.

Domenghini was an important contributor to Atalanta's victory, who scored a hat-trick in this match. "For my first goal I scored a header, which came from a free kick by Calvanes. This goal helped us take the lead early. And then 3-0, a few minutes before the end of the match, because we knew we had won," he said.

There were more than 60,000 spectators on the pitch, but the stadium was not as it was at that time. Pierluigi Pizzaballa was the goalkeeper, known for his rare football cards of the time. He said that the atmosphere that day was very ordinary, and he did not hear any big deal about this victory. He believed that in today's time such a victory would be celebrated for many days, which is also right.

The players included in Atalanta's squad in this match were: Pierluigi Pizzaballa, Alfredo Pesanti, Franco Nodari, Giorgio Veneri, Piero Gardoni, Umberto Colombo, Angelo Domenghini, Flemming Nielsen, Salvatore Calvanese, Mario Mareghetti, and Luciano Magistrelle.
