Preparations are underway for a fresh start at RCD Espanyol, with the departure of five players officially announced in recent hours. Of these players, the loan of four players has ended: Carlos Romero, Ramón Tertas, Charles Piquel and Cyril Ngonge. Also included is Fernando Calero, who ultimately did not agree to extend his contract with the club.

Calero, who comes from Bosillo, has a contract expiring on June 30, ending his seven-year spell at the club. Calero moved to Espanyol from Real Valladolid in 2019 for a fee of eight million euros, the eighth most expensive transfer in Espanyol's history.

However, following his arrival at Espanyol, there were hopes that he would return to Europe, but the team lost its position after the departure of several important players, such as Borja Iglesias and Mario Hermoso.

Calero was tagged for going down twice, and said of this, "We're totally used to it here."

On his departure, his fellow players have missed him a lot. "Like a good professional," Roberto Fernandez wrote on Instagram. Per Milla described him as "number 1".

From a sporting point of view, coach Manolo González will now have to make do without his hero Calero. Calero's best performances came in the 2024 promotion playoffs, and he had the most appearances in the recent season (2,150 minutes in 28 matches). Certainly, it is an emotional farewell for a player who will remain a part of Espanyol.
